Water testing project wins photo competition

Two summers ago CGE collaborated with Smart Villages to support a field visit to Tanzania by Mike Coto and Hajime Shinohara to test a novel approach to purifying water. Mike has just won an award in the People and Skills category of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s national science photography competition for this photo of him testing water in Dar es Salaam.

“Ten per cent of the world’s population lack access to a clean drinking water supply. That’s more than the entire population of Europe. My PhD research has been focused on developing highly active photocatalytic materials that utilise the energy of the sun to oxidise biological and chemical water contaminants. I have validated my promising lab-based findings with a field trial to Tanzania comparing photocatalysts to other common point-of-use water purifiers in an informal settlement. The photo shows me water testing with a local student and friend, Jonathan Nkungu, in Vingunguti, Dar es Salaam.” – Mike Coto
