This week we celebrated the launch of the Global Challenges Initiative (GCI) as an official Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) of the University of Cambridge. GCI aims to enhance the contribution of its research towards addressing global challenges and achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. GCI fulfills the mission of the University, which is to contribute to society, with a particular focus on the poorer half of the world’s population by:
- building a community of Cambridge researchers that contributes to addressing the challenges faced by these communities;
- advancing the Cambridge researchers’ understanding of these global challenges through direct links with research and implementation partners in developing countries
The GCI was launch with a speech by Prof Chris Abell, Pro Vice Chancellor for research at Kings College, on Monday 6 November. Many thanks to all who attended; we will be keeping you updated on future GCI news and events.
