Although the rise of mobile phones and social media provides a new stream of data for documenting human rights violations, the verification of this information raises complications. The Whistle develops digital tools to helpfully, efficiently and safely report and verify human rights issues.
The Whistle emerged from a research project led by Dr Ella McPherson at the Centre for Governance and Human Rights at the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge. Its current team comprises research activity and expertise in Sociology, Development Studies, Politics, International Relations, History, Technology Policy and Computer Science.
The Whistle is currently working with partners in South Africa and Nigeria, as well as the University of Cambridge, to develop and test the project’s first iteration.
