The World Health Organisation attributes 3.8 million premature deaths to air pollution every year, and the problem is particularly acute in fast-growing mega-cities in developing countries. Open-seneca is developing a global, low-cost, mobile air pollution sensor network, driven by citizen science to raise awareness, initiate behaviour change and inform policy.

The availability of fresh water is a growing global challenge, and over-extraction of groundwater in arid and semi-arid regions is of particular concern. ApRES Groundwater is developing an approach to monitoring and managing aquifers in water-scarce regions using an instrument that does not require borewells, has impressive depth resolution, low power requirements and can be remotely controlled.
