This Monday CGE attended the IsDB Transformers Summit 2018. The event brought together entrepreneurs, experts and global leaders to celebrate the 32 winners of the IsDB Transformers Fund. This years summit focused on Sustainable Development Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Cambridge Global Challenges hosted it’s first annual conference on Wednesday 28 November. There were over 150 participants from across the CGC network that attended to discuss how their research is contributing to the SDGs. CGE Cultivator ventures WaterScope, Deploy and GCConnect presented their work at the conference.

Kitty Liao, from Cultivator venture Ideabatic, recently pitched at the Pitch@Palace bootcamp. Kitty is now one of the final twelve to pitch for three minutes at the Buckingham Palace on 8 November. In August and September, CGE Cultivator venture Blue Tap field tested their chlorine injector with CGE member Afrinspire in Uganda. The team visited Kabale, Mbarara, to set up a test rig, and met with local plumbing associations. The expedition was funded through a T4D Travel Award from the Winton Programme for Sustainable Technologies and the Cambridge Malaysian Education and Development Trust.
On Friday 28 September, CGE and Cambridge Wireless co-hosted CW Unplugged: Megacities. The event explored innovative technological solutions for challenges faced in emerging Megacities. CGE Cultivator ventures Camnexus and CamBike Sensor presented business and technology focused questions to the participants. Potential solutions were explored during an ideation workshop and the event was followed by an evening of networking.
Between 27 June and 9 July, the Cultivator project ApRES, testing radar technology for monitoring underground water resources, successfully conducted its first field trial in South Africa. The expedition was sponsored by an award from the Tech4Dev Graduate Sandpit, as well as the British Antarctic Survey, who developed the instrument.
CGE hosted three Missing Maps Map-a-thons with employees from Arm Ltd at the Systems House Office. Missing Maps is a community of volunteers that maps vulnerable people in crisis-prone areas. Working with Humantarian OpenStreetMap, Team Arm and 2030 Vision we spent three weeks mapping Karnplay in rural Liberia for the Liberia Local Empowerment Government Integration and Transparency Programme (LEGIT).
