The Centre for Global Equality (CGE) is a UK-based civil society organisation that evolves innovative solutions to challenges in sustainable development.Particularly those relating to food, water, health, income generation, energy, climate and the environment.
CGE’s innovation activities are run from our Inclusive Innovation Hub in central Cambridge, where the Cultivator is housed. Our contribution to research and teaching at the University of Cambridge is enabled through the Cambridge Centre for Inclusive Innovation based in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.
CGE was founded in 2007 as the Humanitarian Centre, a membership-based organisation made up of organisations and individuals working in the humanitarian and international development sector based in the city of Cambridge, UK.
Humanitarian Centre activities focused on collaborative events and publishing theme-based Annual Reports highlighting the achievements of member organisations.
In 2015 the organisation undertook an extensive stakeholder consultation and self-reflection process to identify its particular purpose and contribution to the humanitarian and international development sectors.
The primary insight from this process was that while the city of Cambridge (its universities and the Cambridge Cluster of research-based industry) is world-leading in research and innovation there was no organised, concerted effort to make the benefits of these knowledge resources available for sustainable development. Filling this gap became the organisation’s strategic priority.
The Humanitarian Centre changed its name to the Centre for Global Equality (CGE) and refocused its organisational strategy towards evolving what became the Inclusive Innovation approach.
Today the majority of CGE’s member organisations are focused on inclusive innovation, with the core active members being those in the Cultivator.
A diverse range of people make up CGE’s community.
A small, active CGE staff team is supported by a dedicated Board of Trustees.
Our Member Organisations are past and present Cultivator ventures, and organisations from CGE’s broader global community committed to our approach to inclusive innovation.
CGE is a company without share capital and a Charity registered in England and Wales. We are a membership-based organisation that elects our board of trustees each year at our AGM.
Our annual reports and financial statements are presented each year at an AGM and are lodged with Companies House and the Charity Commission.
